When William popped the question to Kate Middleton in 2010, the couple had already been together seven years and she was already developing a friendship with Harry too. At the time, it came as a shock when he gave Kate his late mother Princess Diana's sapphire and diamond engagement ring, a ring which was previously in Harry's possession.
After their mother's death in 1997, a number of her personal items were stored for historical purposes, but the boys chose some special "keepsake" items from her belongings in Kensington Palace and Harry chose her ring.
"After Diana died, the boys both chose a keepsake from Kensington Palace when they moved to Charles' rooms in St James’s Palace. William picked his mum’s Cartier watch, and Harry picked her sapphire and diamond engagement ring," a source told the Daily Star.
"They had an agreement that whoever got engaged first would have Diana's ring, and of course that was William and Kate."
While Harry is rumoured to be preparing for a royal engagement of his own to girlfriend Meghan Markle, it's reported he would transform a piece of his mother's jewellery into a diamond ring. Despite the fact that the couple are dating just over a year, they have both been smitten from the beginning and Meghan has been making moves in her personal life in order to accommodate a potential royal proposal - including closing her lifestyle blog and ending her commercial partnerships in Toronto, where she is based and films legal drama Suits.
The couple are currently in his "second home" of Botswana, Africa as Harry whisked his other half away to mark her 36th birthday on a three week trip. Similarly, William got down on bended knee to his wife of six years during a trip to Kenya. And both brothers are conservation activisits.
"Harry wants to show her where his heart really is — and it is Africa," a source told The Mirror.
