Angel Rogersonwas just 19 when the attack happened and was already grieving for her nana, whose funeral had taken place just two days earlier.
She had been with friend Douglas Hodgson, along with his mum and sisters and spent the night with the family at the local pub before going back to their house for a drink on Good Friday in 2015.
When they were going to bed Hodgson's family suggested Angel, from County Durham , can share Douglas's double bed rather than walk home by herself.
Angel had completely trusted Hodgson and had known his family for five years, climbed into his bed fully clothed, alongside Hodgson, who was sleeping, and fell asleep.
But when she woke up in horrible pain she suspected that Hodgson, then 28, had raped her.
The rapist denied it for almost two years until forensic results proved he had attacked her in her sleep and he was put behind bars.
After leaving the house, she messaged Hodgson social media, writing: "I know exactly what you did to me last night" to try and gauge his reaction.
Hodgson admitted he had touched her sexually her - but he "swore down" that he did not rape her.
Angel, who was still grieving at the time, went to the police station after confiding in her older sister Gemma, 28.
Now 21, Angel has waived her right to anonymity over talking about her horrific ordeal.
She said: "I just had a feeling that Douglas had done something to me so I messaged him to get a reaction.
"I just knew something bad had happened.
"I couldn't believe it when he said he had sexually touched me while I was asleep.
"I am a heavy sleeper so I didn't wake up through any of it.
"After I was examined by a doctor to find out what Douglas had done, I scrubbed myself clean with bleach.
"I was crying my eyes out, I was in bits."
Angel's forensic results later confirmed that Hodgson had raped her as she slept next to him.
He confessed to raping Angel on February 23 - after 22 months of denying the offence.
Hodgson, of Langdale Place, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham , admitted rape at Durham Crown Court six days before his trial was due to start.
The victim read out her victim impact statement during his sentencing hearing the following month.
Judge Christopher Prince sentenced Douglas Michael Hodgson, now 30, to six years and four months in prison.
Hodgson was also handed a life restraining order against Angel and he must register as a sex offender for life.
Angel said: "I am happy with the sentence that Douglas was given. I hate him for what he has done to me. He didn't have a leg to stand on.
"The results showed he had to have raped me.
"I did not know what had happened - but I had a feeling it was rape.
"When I found out that was the case, I felt sick. I was expecting to give evidence during his trial in court for months."
Angel has now moved on with her life and is pregnant with her first child.
She said: "It has been very, very hard trusting someone.
"I can't sleep if someone I don't know very well is in the same house.
"But I can't spend the rest of my life being scared.
"I am still getting over what has happened, but I am looking forward to the future."
