Miguel Cano stabbed his own mother to death
It has been revealed that a teenage boy identified as Miguel Cano, was found hiding under floorboards with his stabbed mother’s blood dripping over him.
According to The Sun UK, Miguel Cano, who was 13 at the time, will be charged as an adult over the death of his mother Isabel Zuluaga, 44, in 2015.
The autistic 14-year-old is alleged to have stabbed his mother to death with a large knife at the family home in Simpsonville, North Carolina.
The young man then hid under the floorboards and allowed the woman's blood to drip on him.
The Sun UK reports that horrified workmen stumbled upon a scene of horror when they entered the house, finding Zuluaga dead on the floor.
Her blood was dripping through the floorboards onto young Cano, who had hidden in a crawlspace below the scene.
Undiscovered by the workmen, he was only found walking along the street along several hours later, according to the local sheriff’s office.
And once hauled into a local police station he confessed to stabbing his mother several times in the abdomen.
Now, it has been confirmed the teenager will be tried as an adult.
South Carolina will usually only try those aged 17 or older in an adult court.
But Greenville County sheriff Steve Loftis said: “The fact that there was no remorse shown that we could see, it’s just an extremely unusual incident.
“I don’t have a good grasp of what he was thinking, why he did it and so forth. That would be pure speculation at this point.”
The academically-gifted Cano scored highly in IQ tests, but struggled in emotional IQ exams.
It was later confirmed he struggled with autism.
His trial as an adult means he faces a sentence of 30 years to life behind bars if convicted.
Had he been tried in a youth court and found guilty, he would have only remained locked up until the age of 21.
